On February 17 the my sixth grade class went to our Jesuit camp to weatherize the buildings. We used the techniques we learned at Metro Community College Weatherization Center. We put in new LED light bulbs in the cabin. We also caulked all the windows. When we finished caulking we used a glove to remove the excess liquid. Some people used spray foam and spray foamed the air conditioner. We also went downstairs to do some weatherizing. When my classmate was spraying foam on the furnace, he saw a mouse by his arm and he was going to spray foam it. After we finished weatherizing Mr. Mansour let us have a giant snowball fight it was really fun.

Today me and my classmates went to Metro Community College Weatherization Center to learn more about insulation and light bulbs. We had a very fun time and we wished that we stayed there all day. First we sat down and watched a video that was very cool. It was like red riding hood and her grandma. Next we went over to the back wall to see some very cool light bulbs. We saw LED,ICD, and CFL light bulbs. Next we all went into this house that was cool because it had a lot of hole that air can come out of. There was also this very cool floating floor (It wasn’t really a floor because they put some type of paper over it). Before we left the two guys had a review about what we learned, and they told us extra things too!

We learned that you need to air seal your basement and attic. We also learned that sometimes when you do something another thing happens like when you insulate your attic you might need to air seal your house. They have a camera that is an infer red camera that cost $2,400 dollars to buy it. At the Metro Community College Weatherization Center they has a fake house that simulated all places you might have air leaks.

Then, we saw 8 different light bulbs and learned how many dollars each one costs. We saw what you put in your walls. Finally, we went into this big fake house to see how much cold air sinks into your house. The man who gave us the tour turned on a huge fan and we went around to see where the air was coming from. We had a great time and we will be using our knowledge at camp tomorrow!

When we went in the house we used a thermometer to see how fast the air was coming. The highest was 50.0. I learned where to get stuff to find air leaks and how to get rid of them. Metro weatherization is fun to do as a grown up but it takes hard work. The fake house was cool. We saw the air coming cool. That’s what I learned that day.

Today we went to a different school. It was really fun. I learned of to talk louder and be responsible. All the teachers was depending on us to be on our best behaviour. I was on my best behavior by not laughing or talking. I think maybe we should go to a couple of more schools to learn of to speak in front of a crowd. Their school was very big. I was a little nervous before but after I got use to it, it was comfortable to talk in front of a crowd. This was a great experience for me and great knowledge.
